Smith first touched clay at Ohio University in Athens, OH. Her ceramic education continued as an Apprentice for Kaleidoscope Pottery in Easthampton, MA. She earned her Master's degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, NE.

Smith exhibits her vessels nationally including:  Pottery by Design The Clay Studio, Philadelphia, PA, Cupling CFile.daily, Santa Fe, NM, Yunomi Invitational AKAR, Iowa City, IA and Celebrating Collecting Past Present Future Kennedy Museum of Art, Athens, OH. She is represented by Modern Arts Midtown in Omaha, NE.

Smith throws porcelain forms that reference the quiet landscape of her youth and as a runner moving within that landscape is equally important to the content of her pots.

A dual exhibition AFFINITY with Michael Strand introduced Smith to Fargo, North Dakota where she was The James Rosenquist Artist in Residence 2013. Smith worked spring semester 2013 in the studio dedicated for the program at North Dakota State University’s Downtown Visual Arts Department, interacting with students, holding public lectures, opening her studio for visitors and teaching. Her exit show Relation explored aspects of relationship in vignettes of collaboration, elation and propitiation.
